Tisha Be-Av

Description
Tisha B’Av, meaning “the 9th of Av” in Hebrew, is a day of mourning that typically falls between mid-July and mid-August. It serves as a reminder of the most tragic event in Jewish history—the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE, as well as the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE.
During Tisha B’Av, many Orthodox Jews observe a strict fast, abstaining from food and drink for 25 hours. It is also forbidden to wash, use cosmetics or ointments, or wear leather items.
