History

History of the Mountain Jews
The ancestors of the Mountain Jews presumably came to the Caucasus in the 5th century CE from Persia, where they had settled in the 8th century BCE.

They speak a dialect of the Tat language, which belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. This dialect is also known as the Mountain Jewish language (Juhuri) and is part of the southwestern group of Jewish-Iranian languages. Hebrew, Russian, Azerbaijani, English, and other languages are also widely spoken, and in the diaspora, they have nearly displaced the native language. Mountain Jews differ from Georgian Jews both culturally and linguistically.
